The plastic century. 1930-2030

TedEd

Plastics were introduced to the public in the 1930s as a modern, clean wonder material. In the 1960s and 70`s they were promoted by sophisticated marketing campaigns and subsidised by governments to assist the fossil fuels industry to utilise the 30% of waste from crude oil created from fuel oil production.

Oceana

Despite the many truly incredible achievements of the plastics scientists inventing objects that do make lives better, plastic has been used wrongly by overproduction of cheap, disposables that have made false trillions for investors.

Almost a century later, plastics are causing untold disease, death and toxic environments for all living things on earth. The trillions made surely now need to be re-harnessed to invest in cleaning up the devastation that such plastic abuse has caused.

Greenpeace expose

It isn`t going to be enough to transfer disposables production from plastic to bioplastics or paper. PFAS chemicals are used in ALL disposable packaging, including paper and so called “compostable” or “bio” plastics PLA. PFAS cause cancer and endocrine disorder.

Bloomberg documentary

One way of turning back the plastic and PFAS tide is for us in the live events sector to stop using disposable serve-ware and build a system of nationwide, generic reusables that can be respected and valued rather than detested and thrown into ditches.
