- Bio plastics are not commercially compostable
- Bio plastics are made using valuable farmland that could be used for food production
- Bio plastics ALL use PFAS, which pollute our food chain
- Bio plastic looks exactly like recyclable plastic so it contaminates the recycling chain.
- Bagasse still uses PFAS and still contaminates the food chain and recycling systems because disposable products are so variable and ubiquitous.
- In the latest studies, green stainless steel or second-hand serve-ware reusables are far more sustainable in every significant comparison scale with all types of “disposable”. Even those claiming “compostable” : ENERGY USE, WATER, POLLUTION, HEALTH, RECYCLING, MANUFACTURING, CIRCULAR ECONOMY.
- SOCIAL OUTCOMES. In other words, people enjoy events better and behave better when reusables are used. (But not with plastics!) Humans can smell plastic and we don’t like it.
REUSABLES without “forever chemicals” is the best solution
We must seek ways to remove forever chemicals from the food chain, which means fields, factories, farms, markets, houses, ditches, rivers, oceans and live events.
This means we have to completely stop using any disposable packaging, unless there’s an emergency situation. It’s not good enough to continue trying to clean up the mess. We must stop making so much of it.
The live events industry is one of the most wasteful contributers to this problem per head of population. Live events are not an emergency situation. We’re not the exception and we’ve been giving ourselves a free pass for too long.
Yet Live events are a hugely important aspect of human life. They are very powerful opportunities to inspire, educate and demonstrate new systems, better ideas and celebrations of achievement.
Is the creative industry capable of being a catalyst for change instead of a ball and chain?
